If you enjoy a laid-back pace of life, rolling hills, rugged mountains, and the kind of bucolic scenery that has drawn romantic people for generations, Slovakia is the place for you. From exhilarating hikes in the High Tatra mountains for those with experience, and gentle berry picking, sightseeing tours of settlements like Banska Stiavnica for those looking for something a little less strenuous, Central Slovakia has something for everyone.

Around the old mining town of Banska Stiavnica, you will find that nature has claimed its own. The mining scars in the landscape have turned into tranquil lakes and it is delightful to walk to one of these lakes, swim and have a picnic, and then return to town in time for tea. An interesting walk through the area is the one that goes up to Calvario. It is only a kilometer northeast of the old town. Here you will find a group of red and white baroque chapels and churches. Each of these represents a station of the cross. Visit the city’s tourist information center for hiking maps and more information on some of the area’s cultural and historical highlights.

The High Tatras, on the border between Slovakia and Poland, are visible from space. Gerlach is, at 2,655 m, is the highest mountain in northern and eastern Europe. The splendors of this mountainous landscape have inspired many, including the poet who invented the country’s national anthem. The mountains here are a boon for those who enjoy hiking in the highlands, although keep in mind that these mountains can be dangerous; never walk alone and always be prepared. Weather conditions can change very quickly and on average 20 people a year sadly lose their lives in the Tatras. If you have any difficulties, call Mountain Rescue at 18300, but don’t think of this as an easy opt-out option as they charge a huge calling fee!

Those who are sensitive and prepared and travel with others, however, can have a wonderful time, walking from town to town or tackling some of the more challenging hikes if they have experience and a good level of fitness. Plan ahead and be aware that public transportation options in the area can sometimes be erratic.

If you are looking for a not too challenging hike, walk between Strbské pleso and Popradské pleso, two lakes with panoramic views between them. This hike will only take about two hours or so. On this hike you will also see a moving memorial garden for those who died in the Tatras. Looking for a good hike up the mountain? Try the day hike to Krivan Peak, only during the summer months. This hike will take you to the 2495m summit on a signposted trail.

There are many options for walking both in the rolling countryside and on the high peaks. Take care to stay within your powers and you are sure to have a great time in this beautiful and fascinating country.
