As I sit in my office, looking out the window, the red bird is perched on a branch outside, its head bobbing and bobbing, searching for the next place to land. It has been a constant in my garden for several months.

He flies to my window sill, stays long enough to look inside. I guess he can see me because he flies as fast as he comes.

It is a daily affair. I brought binoculars to the office, so I could keep an eye on it. It has a habit of flying to the same tree branch and then flying to the window. Finally, I was able to capture it in a photo. You have to be fast.

My sister-in-law thinks that the red bird sees a reflection of itself in the window, but my wife thinks differently.

You see, the red bird is a symbol of his mother’s spirit. My wife’s mother died many years ago after suffering from heart disease. A few years ago, my wife wrote a story about the red bird and what it symbolized to her. “Was your mother of hers trying to tell you something?”

My wife has been fearful and anxious about health issues, especially when it comes to her heart.

I look for the red bird early every morning. We know it is a female by its color and texture. We look for it on the Internet. Also, she comes and shows us a worm or an insect in her beak, then she flies away to feed her little ones.

The last few weeks, my wife has been to the doctor. The alarm came when a doctor told her that she had found an irregular heartbeat. She was sent to a cardiologist. Testing is ongoing right now to see if there is a crash.

She firmly believes that the red bird is sending her a message. She comes from the spirit of her mother.

The universe can often convey messages to us through signs. Often we are too busy to stop and consider what may or may not be a sign. We can ask the universe to guide us, but we do not recognize the signal that it sends us in response.

Learning the subtle language of signs can help you interpret the guidance that the universe sends you. We are all blessed with a connection that allows the universe to communicate directly with us. However, in order to understand the information transmitted over that connection, we need to learn to pay attention and know what to look for.

To correctly see and interpret a sign, you must open your heart and mind to the universe and invite its guidance into your life. Many of us are blind to the signals we receive because we expect the angels or our spirit guides to speak to us in a booming voice and tell us exactly what we need to hear.

But the signs are usually from this land and therefore easier to find. A song lodged in your mind or a number that seems to appear everywhere after you’ve asked the universe for guidance could be signs.

Cues can come from the animal world, from strangers, or jump out of a book in the form of an insightful passage. A sign can be a direct answer to one of your questions. Other signs may point you in the right direction, warn you of impending difficulties, or show you a different path. If you want the universe to send you a sign, tell it that you are ready and willing to accept its guidance.

Not everything you hear or see will be a sign. However, if you are receptive and patient, the signals you receive will be easier to recognize. It is important to listen to your intuition. A sign can mean many things to different people, and only you can figure out if the meaning of a sign is for you. As you practice reading the signs and following their guidance, the universe will send you more of them.

By learning from the example of our winged guides, we can all feel empowered to take on bold challenges as we chart adventurous courses. Feel the strength of others moving by your side, as their presence empowers your wings during this journey through the sky of life.

When unexpected tastes hit us, we can choose to find refuge in the loving haven of friends and family. We can even marvel when a difficult day passes like a swift wind, while a kindred spirit traces a path for us through the clouds and the coming rain. If your wings start to ache on your journey, find someone else to fly up front for a while. We all move faster when we move together.

While the red bird sign may or may not be her mother’s spirit telling her to guard her heart, the symbol is in my wife’s mind. Does your mother warn you about her heart?
