3D for the masses

In 2011 we can expect to see phenomenal growth in all things 3D, however some consumers are still reluctant to make the switch. Perhaps the two biggest (and most irrational) fears are that 3D is just a fad or that upgrading is expensive. Both of these misnomers couldn’t be further from the truth.

The fact is that 3D entertainment is not only here to stay, it is now available at an affordable price; rapidly moving from hot “it” technology to a standard feature in most consumer electronics.

3D now affordable

Late last year, we started seeing huge price drops in both TVs and 3D players. Even more significant than the typical pre-holiday price reduction, however, was the introduction of new entry-level models.

Manufacturers such as Panasonic began offering entry-level models with the sole intention of causing a frenzy of buyers, such as with their very popular DMP-BDT100 3D player. This drive became the first to offer many of the core features of high-end drives, but at a price of less than $200, a direct assault on the standard “2D” market.

3D more than movies

In addition to DVD players and televisions, consumers were also introduced to new technologies and 3D game titles last year. Computer graphics giant NVIDIA released new cards, while LCD makers like Lenovo introduced entirely new displays to meet the insane 3D demand of online gamers.

Leading this 3D revolution, Panasonic also launched the first consumer high-definition 3D video camera, cementing 3D as a mainstay in the home entertainment market.

Where is 3D headed in 2011?

2011 will no doubt be known as ‘The Year of 3D’ as the popular technology becomes more integrated into everything from cell phones and laptops to portable media and gaming players.

In fact, at this year’s CES, gaming giant Nintendo announced the launch of its new 3DS handheld gaming system, while at the same time Steve Jobs and Apple were securing new patents for the next generation of 3D displays. They will not require the use of glasses.

The fact is that 3D consumer entertainment is here to stay and now is the time to get on board and enjoy this exciting and affordable technology.
