Weddings, like so much else these days, can cost a lot… But with some planning and some work on your own, they can be affordable and beautiful!

I’m a big fan of having a budget; for your daily expenses, vacations, etc. So start your wedding plans with a budget. This is going to be one of the most special days of your life, but you don’t have to break the bank! Remember that this is YOUR day, so do it your way and don’t try to impress others.

According to some sources I found, the average wedding in the US costs over $20,000! I don’t know about you and your family, but this is too expensive for me. That money would be better spent on a down payment on a house. So start by deciding how much you can reasonably afford and go from there. If you decide to save here and there, here are some ways to do it:

Here are some tips to save money on weddings:

– Reduce the guest list if possible. Many wedding items depend on the number of guests, from the food to the favors to the wedding venue.

– Make your own wedding invitations. Stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels should become your best friends! There are beautiful invitation kits available for you to print at home and decorate yourself. You can make your own for about $1 each, compared to $2-4 each from a printing company. If you opt for purchased invitations, shop around!

– Borrow from others. Wear your mom’s wedding dress, your friends’ jewelry, or your sister’s veil. Save money and add sentimental value to your day, for yourself and for others.

– Use fewer flowers. Decorate only the key areas, such as the altar and the main reception table. Use seasonal or artificial silk flowers. Use a few balloons at the reception instead of all the flowers.

– Limit the number of attendees. Reduce the cost of your flowers and gifts.

– Use a couple of long-stemmed flowers with ribbons instead of bouquets for the bridesmaids. Sometimes simple is more elegant!

– Plan your wedding for an “off-season” time. Most weddings are in summer or winter and on a Saturday. Choosing a time other than this prime time can save you money from vendors and locations.

– Have a non-alcoholic reception.

– Buy Christmas lights out of season and use them to decorate church or reception areas.

– Check out all-inclusive wedding chapels that offer everything from location, pastor, flowers, music, and reception. They usually include the use of a wedding coordinator.

One last note: comparison shop for a professional photographer. This is an area where friends and family may not be your best option.
