What is a t-shirt?

The name was first given to a cloth. This fabric got its name because it was made on the island of Jersey. It is a well-woven fabric, also called a plain knit or single knit. An earlier version of this fabric was for fisherman’s clothing. It was a heavier fabric than those used in the early 2000s. Today, the term Jersey is used for many garments made from Jersey fabric. History:

This fabric has developed over time to be what it is today. The following is a brief timeline of the historical background of Jersey fabric.

– A jumper was mainly used for hosiery.
– The Traditional Jerseys were dyed blue.
– In 1879, an actress named Lillie Langtry made it fashionable to wear during the day. She was also given the name Jersey Lilly. She was wearing a long, tight shirt over a skirt.
– Later, the famous Coco Channel popularized the fabric. It began to be used to make comfortable clothes, dresses and suits for women.

The fabric making process:

– T-shirts can be knitted by hand or machine.
– Knits are made from the basic knit stitch.
– Knits have rows of loops; each loop is drawn through the loop below.
– Compared to other fabrics, jersey fabrics are lighter.

– Jacquard knit
– Clocque sweater
– Stretch jersey

Applications:

There has been evolution is the production of the fabric. They were heavy fabrics used in fishermen’s clothing. Sailors wore tight-fitting, tunic-style sweaters made from this fabric. Over time its uses have expanded. This fabric has been used to make clothing called Jersey Clothing. They are used to make t-shirts, hoodies, jackets and the list goes on.

In sports:

Sportswear is also called Jerseys. These consist of a team logo, sponsor name and numbers. A player’s jersey is his identity while he is playing. Jersey gains an identity that is more than a garment. Most of the time a jersey is retired and placed at the team’s home venue to honor the player.
