When waxing male clients, we are often left with clear lines between the depilated and unshaved areas of the body. A classic example of this is during a back and shoulder wax, most men will have their shoulders shaved to follow the deltoid muscle. This has the advantage of keeping the hairline above the sleeve of the shirt, but for a particularly hairy customer this can be a problem.

There are several methods you can use to help blur this hairline, generally a combination of them produces the best and most natural look.

Before starting to wax, be sure to consult with the client about how far they want the waxing to go. Be aware of where the clothes are worn, for example the shoulder hairline would normally be above the shirt. On the abdomen and back, check where the client usually is with his pants; if they are quite low cut, you may need to go down a bit more than normal.

When looking at the client’s body before starting the treatment, look for the areas where the hair changes direction. These often provide a great line of work that you can wax to.

Sometimes when you want to leave a particularly straight line, you can apply the wax in strips along the hair growth and then remove in the usual direction against. This is done after you have completed the body of waxing, wax to the edge you want to leave and then follow with a thin line, just one to two cm wide above the hairline to straighten it.

This is a technique that I often use along the side of the body. Hair generally grows towards the spine, you can run a line of wax down the side of the body to give it a straight edge, then strip it off as usual.

Once you have a hairline that you are happy with, you can now mix it up. To start, use your razor, trim the hair slightly just at the edge of the line, this will remove some of the weight and it will look better. If the client is particularly hairy, you may want to suggest that they get some hair cut. For example, if you just had a wax on your back and shoulders, bandage a border on the chest to tidy it up and give it a more natural look.

The second technique is to use wax strip again, this time apply the wax directly on the strip, not on the client’s body. Fold the strip in half over itself and very gently press the two sides of the wax together. This reduces much of the stickiness of the wax, so you can now wax directly on the hairline, but it will not remove all the hairs, only some of them, which will then make it thinner.
