For most people, eight hours a day is spent, if not more, in the workplace. Often cubicles inside the office can make you feel as gray as the carpet under your feet. If your space has been in need of a much-needed makeover for some time, there are plenty of ways to make it more inviting. These eco-friendly ideas are a surefire way to make office cubicle decorating easy and fun, and go from drab to fabulous.

We all know that plants can liven up almost any room. But did you know that they can also be beneficial? Not only have they been proven to reduce stress and increase work productivity, they also improve air quality. For people who work in an environment with houseplants, twelve percent were more likely to work more and have less stress. So go ahead and add some greenery. Whether they’re lilies, tulips, or just your common houseplant, they’re a great addition to any space.

Images are a fun way to add a sense of personalization in the workplace. Whether showing your favorite dog, feline, or friends and family, photos can be a reminder of what to expect after a long, hard day. Try to use frames made from reclaimed wood or bamboo products. Not a big fan of clutter? A cork bulletin board, filled with all your favorite fans, can solve this problem and is eco-friendly.

Tired of looking at the same computer for hours on end? Show your expressive side by changing your wallpaper or download an awesome screensaver. Like sports? Show your favorite team. Not only does it beat the plain background of windows that is normally displayed, but it also gives your eyes something to look forward to when they need a break.

Don’t have a window? No problem! Post a picture of your favorite landscape. This can give you the feeling of being outside when you are in all of reality; you are confined to being inside. A landscape photo can put you in a peaceful and serene state of mind. Not bad for looking at when your boss is really pushing a deadline or your phone just keeps ringing off the hook.

A candy dish is not only a nice thing to do when you’re craving a sweet treat, but it can also be nice to look at. Take a bowl from home that is colorful and attractive or a unique looking jar. M&M’s and skittles can add a lot of color. Mints are a good fix, as are other types of hard candies. Trying to stay away from sweets? Grab some trail mix or granola to eat. Candy dishes can also change with the seasons and festivities.

Tired of all those sticky notes and extra paperwork? Make a recycling bin! Dress up an old box with pretty wrapping paper or use an old box from your local thrift store. Not only will your workspace be free of distracting clutter, but you’re also doing the environment a favor.

Although decorating your office cubicles can be a fun way to express yourself, be careful not to over-personalize as workplace etiquette still applies. Offending your coworkers will not earn you any brownie points on your ultimate redecorating skills. You wouldn’t like to have a half-naked poster of a man or woman displayed inside your cubicle or the latest dirty joke hanging from a thumbtack.
