You, as the director, and your beauty pageant contestants, are putting your careers in the hands of the pageant judges. A fair and impartial trial is absolutely essential to making the best possible decision about who represents the title and crown of your pageant.

Now let’s select the categories in which the contestants will be judged. This can vary from contest to contest depending on the topic.

Here is my recommendation for children:

Facial beauty

Personality

Creativity / Costumes

General appearance

Now each person defines facial beauty differently, this is a bonus because it adds diversity to the mix. The contestant’s personality is one area where someone can really surprise the judges to increase their score.

The overall appearance may cover the contestant’s selection of attire. How appropriate is your appearance for the age group / division? Does the color highlight and accentuate the best parts of the contestants’ characteristics and talents?

The judges should comment in a positive way.

Examples would be:

* Big smile

* Beautiful presentation

* I love that outfit

* You go girl

* etc.

Judges must score 8 as the lowest number and 10 as the highest. Use decimal points in punctuation. Ex: 8.5, 9.2, 9.3, etc. This helps to eliminate ties within groups.

Naturally, the contestant with the highest score gets the Queen or King, followed by 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Give a fourth runner-up in the Teen and Senior divisions.

Inform the judges that the contestants can view the score sheets. Judges must be respectful and tactful with all contestants.

As the director, you can choose whether to show the score sheets to the contestants or to others. I always show the score sheets. It helps establish trust in the contestants, their family, and other contestants. This will give your organization the responsibility to fairly judge the event.

The idea of contests is to encourage and motivate people to be the best they can be.

Choose judges from your sponsors, business partners, and your network of friends. Try to get a combination of background and career types.

It is very important to choose the best possible representative of the title because it will represent your contest for the next year and beyond.
