You see it all the time; people distressed by their exercise routine. You hear people in the gym say things like; “I’ll be fine when I get out of here.” I’m a gym person, so I don’t relate to the agony of being in the gym… cardio or fat burning… that’s a different story. I’ve never liked running, pounding on a treadmill, stationary bike, aerobics classes, or any other cardio exercise. That’s why I didn’t stay with these disciplines. I found something I enjoy doing and got so involved with it that I’ve already lost twelve pounds and gained cardiovascular benefits. I’m going to tell you how I did it, but I’m not suggesting you do what I did. I suggest you find something you enjoy and it will be very easy for you to maintain discipline.

As I did:

Mountain bike

A friend had asked me to go mountain biking with him and I said yes. Next thing I know, we’re out in the fresh air and daylight making its way across trails and rocks. He was having a blast! Right after I bought a bike and started riding alone and with others. Going up steep hills, long slow hills, the scenery, nature, fresh air… I love it! I found myself riding at every opportunity and not even thinking of it as my workout routine. My resting heart rate dropped, my waistline got smaller, and I feel great! A course that at first was impossible for me was now a routine of 3 times a week. Not only do I complete the course, but I regularly reduce the time it takes me to complete it. The key is to find something you like to do. What could that be for you? For me, obviously, it’s mountain biking.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Walking Walking is a great way to relieve stress, lose weight, burn calories and just feel good. You can enjoy nature or see the city! Find a walking partner and talk about your day while you walk. If you live in a harsh climate, you can find a place to walk indoors. I see walkers in malls all the time.
  • Martial Arts Martial arts are a great way to get fit and a wonderful discipline. You will increase speed, flexibility, confidence and cardiovascular capacity. If you are the type that prefers to be in a group, martial arts may be for you.
  • Aerobics Classes Although aerobics classes aren’t my cup of tea…many people love them. How will you know until you try? This is another activity you might want to try if you like to be in groups. I have witnessed some very high energy aerobics classes.
  • Dancing is now a way to have fun and get fit! Dance! I’m sure you can find lessons, clubs, and others willing to join in the fun.
  • Running Maybe you’re like me… you like solitude and would rather be in a small group or alone. Try running. Nothing but your thoughts, nature and the road ahead. A running program has many benefits.
  • Home Exercise Equipment Perhaps you’re someone who has too little time to join a gym or a group of people for a regular exercise routine. A piece of home gym equipment may be just what you need. You can ride an elliptical machine while the kids nap or run on the treadmill while you watch the evening news. Buy your equipment from a reputable dealer and be sure to search online for the best prices. This is another way to enjoy an exercise routine if you prefer to be alone. There is a lot of good equipment available that is joint friendly and very quiet.
  • DVD or VHS That’s right. If you think you’d like an aerobics class but aren’t quite ready to join a gym…a pre-recorded workout might be for you. You can find Tae-Bo, aerobics, yoga or hundreds of other titles where you can work out in the privacy and comfort of your home.

These are just a few suggestions. I’m sure you can think of many more and I hope you’re thinking of something you really enjoy doing. Who says getting in shape has to be an exhausting task? Do something you love and it will be easy for you. You will look forward to your next routine and workout with excitement.

I wish for you the best of health.
