When lice are circulating, as much as you try to protect your child from getting them, they are likely to become infected. So as much as we would like to avoid them, if possible, we must stay one step ahead and focus on the available lice treatments.

For as long as I can remember, the standard way to deal with lice and nits was to run to our local pharmacy and buy a large bottle of nit shampoo. Soap it well on my son’s hair and give him a good hairstyle and voila!
But as Bob Dylan once sang, “Times are a change” and they certainly are. Lice are getting smarter with these chemicals that we’ve been using for years to destroy them and these sneaky little pests are starting to become immune to them.

If you’re like me, you’re probably very worried about all of this. These products have the potential to be dangerous to your health and we don’t know what long-term effects they might be hiding. We can all read what they are made of on the label, but do we really know what they contain?
For longer than I can remember, I have used these lice shampoos thinking I had no other choice. But after long and tedious hours of research, I finally managed to find some serious alternatives. The magic of these alternative treatments is that they were all totally natural products and many of which can be found on your kitchen cabinet or in your garden.
Are you crazy?
These are natural, safe, and non-toxic lice treatments made with everyday ingredients that anyone can use. Products like peanut butter, mayonnaise, and olive oil. I know it might sound crazy, but these things are absolutely brilliant at killing lice.
Nits, which are the eggs laid by adult lice, are very difficult to remove from the hair. They stick to the shaft with a kind of natural cement and they don’t really want to move. Just warm some white vinegar and massage into hair. After a short period of time, the acidity of the vinegar dissolves the sticky cement helping to keep the nits attached to the hair and can be easily combed out with a lice comb.
When your child comes home with a good family of lice, it can be a nightmare to deal with. But an even bigger nightmare is worrying about exactly what you’re shampooing your hair to try to remove them.
