Most people don’t realize that suspension is important to consider when buying a helmet. There is more than one type, so make sure you know which type you are getting when purchasing your helmet.
Pinlock suspension is the cheaper of the two and is usually found on less expensive helmets. The system is a simple snap-lock mechanism. The owner can make adjustments to the accessory by simply sliding the pin into place. The mechanism itself is simple and easy to use, although adjustments require the helmet to be removed before doing so. Pinlock suspension helmets are not the best option for those who are continually adjusting their helmet.
The ratchet suspension is the other type of suspension. This type can be adjusted by turning a knob on the back of the suspension. In doing so, the helmet is tightened or loosened. Helmets with ratchet suspension tend to be more expensive than those that use the pinlock mechanism. The best benefit of using ratchet suspension instead of pinlock is that it can be adjusted without the wearer having to remove the helmet. This means that the helmet can be adjusted quickly and comfortably without wasting time.
In addition to the type of suspension, you also need to consider the number of point options the suspension has. These point options are the number of connections between the suspension and the outer shell of the helmet. The more connection points, the stronger and more durable the helmet is against shocks. The number of suspension points on most helmets is four, six, or eight.
