Bringing a new puppy into your home can be a very exciting experience for you and your family, however, training a puppy when you work can be overwhelming at first. Many people aren’t sure they can handle adding a new animal to their lives while working. This is a real concern and should be taken into account before bringing a puppy home. The good news is that it is very manageable with the right guidance and the right training steps.
There are a number of things that need to be considered before training a puppy as they will not be present all the time in the early stages of training, which are usually the most important.
One of the best ideas is to create a safe place inside your house where you can have your puppy when you are not around. Not only does it give your pup a new sense of their own territory, but it also lets you know that your pup will be safe all day long wherever you place them. Crate training a puppy can be very helpful in these situations where you won’t be home. A word of warning though: don’t keep your pup in a crate if he’s going to be working 8 or more hours a day on a full-time schedule. Puppies do not have the bladder training that adult dogs do, and they will need to use the bathroom at some point during the period of time that you are away.
Another great idea is to have a small area where your pup is safe and you can place toys and a small amount of water. It’s easy enough to fence off an area of your house or apartment with old baby gates or other things that you can style together to suit the size of your breed. Another thing to consider is starting the training on paper. When you’re gone all day, you don’t want to come home to puddles of poop and urine scattered everywhere. This happened to me several times until I did some research and found the correct methods.
Another thing that could make a big difference is taking your pup out to use the bathroom before you leave in the morning. This way, the chances of your pup having an accident in the house are greatly decreased while you’re not there, depending on how long you’re away. Also, if you have the option of stopping at home during your lunch break, this would be a great opportunity to let your pup out real quick. You can find time to housebreak your pup while you work, and it’s really not that hard!
