Repair Driveway Cracks
If you’ve noticed cracks in your driveway, you may wonder what you should do. The answer to that question will depend on the type of cracks. If the cracks aren’t large and are in a relatively small area, you can use a crack filler. Crack filler is a very fluid substance that is self-leveling. However, be careful not to overfill cracks because that could cause the sealant to show up on top of the repaired cracks.
Large cracks on a driveway are more likely to occur on older driveways and may be indicative of structural problems. In this case, a professional installer may recommend removing the old driveway and pouring new concrete. Driveway crack repairs can improve the appearance of a home, as well as increase its value.
While some cracks can be repaired, others may require a complete replacement of the driveway slab. In cases where the cracks are widespread or are resulting from settlement or sunken concrete, a replacement is required. Smaller cracks, such as those caused by cosmetic damage, can be repaired by applying a crack-healing agent like PolyFlexDS or FlexSet. For more extensive driveway cracks, you can use a concrete-welder cartridge.
Crack repairs should not be done immediately. Rather, you should wait until the new concrete has dried overnight before you attempt to drive on it. While cracks that are under a quarter inch wide are not a cause for concern, they can lead to deeper problems in the future. Crack filler will only solve the problem temporarily and should be used only as a last resort, rather than a long-term solution.
When to Repair Driveway Cracks
Crack repairs can also be a costly proposition. Even if you have the time, it is important to use proper equipment to ensure that the job is done right. For larger jobs, a pressure washer or a garden hose is a good tool. If you want to do a smaller job, however, a garden hose is also fine.
Cracks that are smaller than 3/8 inch in depth can be fixed by homeowners. However, if the crack is much larger, a professional should be hired to fix it. To fix a small crack, you can use textured concrete patching compound. To apply this compound, make sure to thoroughly dry the area first and then work the compound into the crack. If the crack is deeper than three-eighths of an inch, you should use a sanding compound. After applying the sand, you should smooth the patch until it is even with the surface of the driveway.
Larger cracks require a backer rod. This rod is similar to a pool noodle and is cut to fit inside the crack. The length of the rod should be slightly larger than the crack’s width. The backer rod should be installed at least 1/2 inch below the concrete surface.
A driveway is the first thing that guests see when they arrive at your home, and it can really affect the curb appeal of your home. Small repairs such as crack filling or asphalt patching can be done yourself and are relatively inexpensive. Larger Driveway repair, however, will likely require the services of a driveway contractor, who will be able to assess the damage and recommend the best solution.
