Transformers are back in popular culture. And with his return also come the games associated with the franchise. And while I’ve never been a fan of the games that go along with the movies, (as they generally turn out to be lacking in serious effort) I did find a Transformers game for BlackBerry worth playing, Transformers G1: Awakening.

This game actually follows the old cartoon series rather than the new Michael Bay movies, but its classic feel adds to its friendliness. It’s also a turn-based strategy game that 1: you don’t see very often in the gaming world anymore, and 2: makes the experience more relaxed because you can put the phone down if you need to without worrying about pausing the game.

The game is easy and you basically use your time units to transform, move and fight the Decepticons. The controls are simple and intuitive and use the BlackBerry track wheel. There is a help file and tutorial at the beginning of the game if you need it. And the story unfolds as you progress through several different levels.

Battle is the simple stat-based type in which a unit’s attack and defense values are compared to its opponent’s. Once your unit runs out of defense, they will be out (until you reactivate them through the Metroplex).

One of the cooler features is that as Autobots you work as a team and you can, while attacking with Bumblebee, you can repair it with Ratchet, or use Ratchet to provide supporting fire to defeat the enemy more quickly. Just be careful because the Decepticons also fight as a team.

The graphics are simple but provide a classic ’80s feel that works great on a mobile device with a small screen.
