We’ve all heard the terms used to describe windows: double-hung, single-hung, triple-pane, casement, sliding, etc. Although windows differ in the way they work and function from day to day, one thing remains the same: if you have windows, you should clean them.

Double-hung and single-hung windows are pretty much the same thing, but they differ in which parts they move. In the first, both panels move, one up and one down so you can get air into your space and vent out bad odors. Both the top and the bottom or both can be open at any time. With the latter, however, it’s only the bottom panel that moves up or down, leaving the top panel as a stationary window.

Both types of windows have a timeless style and are highly functional. They don’t take up a lot of space because they don’t swing in or out but go up and down and are pretty easy to keep clean. They look great and can be used in any room in the house, making them a popular choice among consumers.

If your single or double hung windows aren’t of the tilt-up variety, as some are, it doesn’t matter, they’re still easy to clean. Just put them in the closed position and wipe the inside panel, then the outside panel. If they lean, do it in the shade as you can clean both sides at the same time without moving from the inside out. Tilt the window in, clean both sides, and put it back in the frame. What can be easier than that?

All glass can be cleaned with a variety of products from warm soapy water to specialized glass cleaners, but you can get great streak-free results with something as simple as newspaper and vinegar. Both are easily accessible and get the job done quickly and effectively.

Windows can also benefit from a professional cleaning. A professional window cleaner has the right tools and knows how to make all your windows shine. They are also experts in insect damage and repair and can tell you what to watch for in terms of wear and tear and when it is time to replace your windows entirely. While you may not need a professional every time, once or twice a year is a good bet to keep your house looking good!
